# What Drives the Cost of an MVP

Scope, integrations, the number of user roles, compliance needs and design depth drive the cost of an MVP far more than the technology stack does. Fix the scope before you ask for a quote, and quotes become comparable. A focused MVP typically takes 8 to 14 weeks with us. Larger platforms with AI, multi-tenant architecture or complex compliance needs usually take longer, and we give a real timeline after discovery, not before.

## What does an MVP include?

An MVP (minimum viable product) is the smallest version that lets real users do the one job your product exists for. It is not a cheap version of the full product. It is a deliberately narrow one.

## What are the biggest cost drivers?

- **Scope and number of features.** Every extra screen, report or workflow adds design, build and testing time.
- **Integrations.** Payment gateways, messaging services, accounting tools and other third-party systems each add work and ongoing maintenance.
- **User roles and permissions.** Each role needs its own screens and rules. Complex permissions are one of the most common hidden costs.
- **Compliance and data rules.** Regulated data, consent requirements and audit trails add effort.
- **Design depth.** Custom interfaces and animation cost more than clean, standard layouts.
- **Platforms.** Web only, or web plus iOS and Android, changes the work significantly. See our comparison of [React Native vs Flutter.](https://octakris.com/react-native-vs-flutter-for-a-startup-mvp-how-we-decide/)
- **Architecture.** Whether a product is one business or many customers makes a difference. See [multi-tenant SaaS architecture in Laravel.](https://octakris.com/multi-tenant-saas-laravel-single-vs-multi-database/)

## Which features can you defer?

Scoping is the strongest cost control. On one recent platform for a multi-branch business, we kept the first version small by agreeing not to build:

- A leave-request and approval workflow (admin-recorded leave only)
- Policy issuance in the insurance module (lead tracking and campaigns only)
- A native mobile app (an installable web app covers the need)

The system was sized for a few locations and a small team, with the option to scale later. Deciding what to leave out early saved far more than any technology choice could.

Ask of every feature: would the first users still get value without it? If yes, defer it.

## How long does an MVP take?

Time follows scope. The 8 to 14 week range is a guide, not a promise: a focused MVP often fits within it, and anything with heavy integrations, compliance rules or several user types will take longer.

## How do you compare quotes?

Quotes are only comparable if they are based on the same scope. Ask each provider:

- What exactly is included, and what is not?
- How are changes to scope handled and priced?
- Who does the work, and who reviews it?
- What happens after launch: support, hosting, fixes?
- What do you need from us, and by when?

Be careful with a quote that is far lower than the others. It often means a narrower scope, a junior team or costs that appear later.

## What should you do before asking for a quote?

Write a one-page brief: who the users are, the one job the product does, the must-have features, the integrations you need and your deadline. This alone can make quotes far more accurate.
