What should every SEO report show?
- Search Console clicks and impressions, split into brand and non-brand. This is the ground truth for how many people found the site through Google.
- Which pages and queries drive non-brand growth.
- Leads, calls, form fills or sales from organic search, where tracking allows.
- Work completed this month, in plain language.
- Work planned for next month, and why.
- Issues and risks, stated honestly.
Keep it to a few pages. A client should understand it in five minutes.
Why separate brand and non-brand?
Brand queries are people who already know the business and are searching for it by name. They show existing awareness. Non-brand queries show whether new customers are finding you. A report that mixes the two can make a site look healthy when new-customer growth is flat.
For example, in a recent review of our own site, almost all clicks came from one country and none of the named non-brand clicks came from the markets we wanted to reach. A combined traffic total would have hidden that completely.

Which metrics are vanity metrics?
Treat these with caution:
- Estimated traffic from third-party tools. These are modelled guesses, not measurements. On one client site, a reported traffic drop in a third-party graph turned out to be an artifact of the estimate. The real issue was a group of 16 state-specific page keywords falling out of the top 100, which Search Console confirmed.
- Total keywords tracked or ranking, without regard to whether anyone searches for them.
- Average position on its own. It is easy to distort and says nothing about clicks.
- Raw sessions that include brand, bots and irrelevant visitors.
